If you were conditioned to be extremely selective with your word count I can see how that would carry on into your creative writing as well. Writing 79,000+ words can be easy when an idea/characters take me away and I can't stop. The problem comes when I hit 100,000 words I have to get it down to 75,000. Then the ability to let go begins! It comes from years ...I think I am an underwriter. It comes from years in corporate finance where every thought had to be condensed into a choppy bullet point. My business 1-page-memos were about 500 words. Now when I get over 1000 words in a short story, I know I am making a big step forward (but how do you write 79,000 more?!?)Lauri Meyershttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15714245926405732068noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5297185354592798924.post-8122396935662155782012-10-22T12:20:10.740-04:002012-10-22T12:20:10.740-04:00I agree! Don Maass's Writing The Breakout Novel Workbook is super as is his and The Breakout Novelist; A Story is a Promise by screenwriter Bill Johnson; Make Every Word Count by Gary Provost (whose title every writer should take to heart); Between the Lines by Jessica Morrell; and No More Rejections by Alice Orr.
